Summer Time

by Carly, Grade 4, Dover, MA

Kids running

Buses rushing

Parents     hugging

Me       jumping

BBQ       burning

Pool       splashing

Camp       boring

Special Place

by Andrew, Grade 4, Dover, MA

I wish I had a special place

Somewhere I could be alone

Be a bird, a cat, a dog

Where my hot anger cools to cold peace

Shelves full of books of many kinds

Travel to caves,

 the stars,

and far away places

Where it smells as sweet as a flower

Blowing in the cold spring breeze

Where it is warm like a summer day

Where it is soft like a fuzzy blanket

Where my imagination can run free

Like a pony in a green, flowery meadow

I wish I had a special place

Somewhere where the world is a nice place

Where the colors around me make me

feel like I am inside a colorful rainbow

stretching across the sky

Where I can be alone

A very secret lair

Oh why

can’t I have

a special place?

Stopping By Flowers on a Sunny Day

(in honor of Robert Frost)

by Cam, Grade 4, Sherborn, MA

Whose flower beds I think I know

She lives in a cottage far away from home

She will not see me stopping here

To watch her beds fill up with light

My stomach is grumbling

I want to go

Who's home, I do not know

Between the flowers there is a lake

the lightest day of the year

The only smell is the swift smell of flowers

Awake.

The beds are bright and neat

But I have groceries to carry

And miles to go before I sleep

And miles to go before I sleep!

Can You Imagine?

by Claire, Age 7,  South Salem, NY

a deck without a chair

a wood without a bear

a harbor without a dock

a foot without a sock

a clock without a time

a poem without a rhyme

a lake without a trout

a whale without a spout

a lady without a purse

a school without a nurse

a person without a leg

an incubator without an egg

a sky without blue

me without you!!!

Freckles

by Anna, 3rd Grade, Orchard Park, NY

They appear everywhere

they are little dots here and there.

From the tip of my nose

to between my toes,

freckles won’t leave me alone.

In the Sea

By Daniella, Grade 3, Scarsdale, NY

In the sea

I see little fish like dancing candy bars.

In the sea

I see coral reef like swirling lollipops.

In the sea

I see sand like sleeping caramel on my ice cream.

In the sea

I see seaweed like flying green sprinkles on my sundae.

I love the sea!

Christopher Columbus

by Shrey, Grade 2, Scarsdale, NY

Christopher Columbus is the best.

He discovered a new land for the rest.

With the wind in his sail

He crossed the Atlantic feeling frail.

When the lookout shouted land

They all kissed the sand!

He went back to Spain with spices and gold

That’s the end of the story as it is told.

In the Mirror

By Nisha, Grade 3, Scarsdale NY

I see my eyes like a dark chocolate bar swimming in a pool of milk,

I see my nose like a roller coaster that has two caves.

I see my teeth like white clouds in the pink sky,

I see my lips like a bunch of flowers swirling on my face.

I feel special because nobody has a face like mine.

School is

By Lisa, Grade 5, Paris, France

math                troubling

science            electrifying

What's for Breakfast?

by Andrew. Age 7, Riverside, CT

What's for breakfast?
Tell me please.
Waffles with syrup or toast with cheese?
Scrambled eggs and apple pie?
Toast with butter or tuna on rye?
Oops!  Of course... I already had breakfast.

The Paint in the Sky

by Katie, Age 8, Katonah, NY

The soft wisps of air travel to my heart,
The soothing colors fill the sky like a calming paint,
The air fills with a clink, hornk, mamama
The smells, oh, they are like smelling the paint in the sky,
 so wonderful,
The clouds seem to have life hopping around in them,
My hair wraps itself around me, traveling friskily around my face.
I feel relaxed, as if the world is my brother.

In The Mirror

by Catherine, Age 6, Colchester, VT

In the mirror
I see eyes like sparkiling stars.
I see lips like cherry mountains.
I see teeth like mini marshmallows.
I see my tongue like chewed-up
   cherry bubble gum.
I feel happy that I have this face
In the mirror.

The Garden

by Jenna, Age 8, New Rochelle, NY

Flowers smell lovely
Bringing happiness to you
Inside the Garden

Volcano

by Joshua, Grade 3, Bedford, NY

Red over the horizon,
piercing the sky,
the big mass below,
waiting.
The molten red,
oozing out,
making a wretched scene.
The cap blows,
ash flying,
rock falling,
fire ripping the sky,
for many days and nights.
A disastrous destruction.

Toby

by Caroline, Grade 3, Riverside CT

The dog changed our whole life
Black like the night sky
With just a little bit of Moon and Stars
Like a flash of lighting when he runs
Perks up his ears
Jumps in the air trying to catch snowballs
Looks like he flips when it’s Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
He comes and puts his head on my lap
And starts whining for me to give him food
He tilts his head
And rolls his eyes
So when nobody's looking
I sneak some food down
Because his face is so adorable
But then everybody catches me
Then we say
"Group hug!"
Then Toby jumps on us.

Winter Oh Winter

By Charlotte

Grade 4, New Rochelle, NY

Winter oh Winter you’re gone once more
spring is coming and you’re going.

Winter peek your head up one more time
and snow for me.

Winter come one more time
I’ll wait for you from dawn to dusk.

Winter speak to me in snow
spring is around the corner.

Please oh please come once more
Snow please snow
Spring is around the corner.

My Face

by Nick, Age 9, Yorktown, NY

My hair is like black snakes swirling in the night sky.

My eyes are like golden maple syrup puddles in whipped cream.

My teeth are like white rhinos guarding the pink water slide.

My eye brows are like black sprinkles on peach-colored ice cream.

My nose is like a scanner picking up scents around the world.

My ears are like machines eavesdropping listening carefully to everything they hear.

So, that is my face.

Are you sure this is real?

My Backpack

by Sydney, Age 10, Dracut, MA

Something that has a strap
Something that can hold my cap
It can hold all my books
All my toys in all its nooks.

When it hits me on the side,
It goes swish, swish.
As I walk by, you see it come.
You might think it’s small and dumb.
I love it ‘cause it’s not fat like a plum.

If you don’t like it, I understand.
But to me it’s just like a very best friend.

It’s not old and it’s not new.
But it has an age just like you.
It will wear out some day soon
And when it does, I’ll cry boo hoo.

Sushi

by Jonas, Grade 3, Cold Spring, NY

Salty seaweed
River rice
All that goodness,
Just to find
Bitter raw fish inside.

My Shell

by Emma, Grade 2, Darien, CT

My shell looks like chocolate
and vanilla ice cream.
My shell sounds like the waves
crashing on to the shore.
My shell feels bumpy
and that’s my shell.

When You Turn Off The Light

by Melanie, Grade 2, Larchmont, NY

When you turn off the light
things come out.
Very strange things
like quail and peacocks
crossing the street
or flying about.

MY MUSIC

by Saoirse, Age 9, Cold Spring, NY

MY MUSIC IS A SOUND I LOVE
LIKE A DOVE WHOOING IN THE SPRING OR
A BEE BUZZING IN THE SUMMER
SOMETIMES THE SOUNDS OF CRICKETS AT NIGHT
MY MUSIC IS NATURE
I hope it doesn't bite!

My Sister

by Frankie, Age 7, Larchmont, NY

My sister is as bright as a shooting star
As beautiful as a sunny day at the pool
when she is tanning
As sweet as freshly baked Chocolate Chip cookies
As beautiful as a gem and pearl
As shiny as a diamond
As bright as the beautiful blue sky

Eagle

by Lilly, Age 9, Bedford, NY

Wings, flapping
Eyes, glaring
Beak, gleaming
Feathers, shining
Talons, sparkling
What a beautiful bird!

A Broken TV Remote

by Alexandra, Grade 3, Bedford, NY

I try and try
                      Until it works
I say to myself quick it's starting
I try to move the channel
                        Up and down
But the channel is just sitting there
I say to it come on
I do,t want to learn about a bone
                       Then I see,
                   I'm using the phone!

Night's Wind
by Celeste, Rye, NY

She dances in her invisible gown.
Whispering,
whisper,
whisper.
She wakes you
and taps on your window.
Tap,
tap.
Morning comes
and she leaves you
as you wake.

The Chimpanzee in Me
by Charlie, Grade 5, St. Louis, MO

There's always been,
a chimpanzee,
deep down way,
inside of me.
With strong arms,
like rubber bands,
and great feet,
just like its hands.
It swings on trees,
like baseball bats,
a great gymnast,
without its mats.
it makes me feel,
like I am flying,
In trees for years,
never dying.

'Spelling'

by Hanna, Age 9, Larchmont, NY

Sometimes I don't spell words right
When the teacher tells me I hold on tight
and try to figure out how to spell it.

I think and think
I feel like my brain is getting smaller
Then I yelp "What if I shrink?"
I'm already small and I want to grow tall
So I better get this word right

I got it!
It's "F-U-N"
What! I'm only in kindergarten
Did you think I was ten?

'Ode To An Orange'

by Natalie, 3rd Grade, Scarsdale, NY

An orange ball of suspicion
If I could see you again
I wish I could but, I cannot
because I ate you.
You were such a nice ORANGE.

'Shell'

'Pretzel'

by Hannah, Age 9, Scarsdale, NY

Pretzel, my friend,
you look like you are all knotted up.
You are smooth
but sometimes your roads get a little bumpy.
You smell like the ocean.
You taste like a pretzel.
Sorry I won't see you again
because I just ate you.

'Things I like'

by Ruhee, Age 6 and a half, Ahmedabad, India

I like:
Ribbons and laces, dolls and dresses;
Story books and songs and pretty necklaces.

Roses and lilies, mangoes and cherries;
Chocolates and raisins and pink strawberries.

Rainbow and dewdrops, honey and milk;
Gold and silver, satin and silk.

Butterflies and fairies, doodles and stars,
Ice-cream and jellies and cookie jars.

Pizzas and pastries, puddings and pies;
Cashews and almonds, hot French fries.

Rabbits and puppies, canaries and parrots;
Spinach and beans, cucumbers and carrots.

I like all these things, they give me pleasure;
But Mama’s hug is the ultimate treasure!

'Wagtail'

by Ella, Age 10, London, England

she hops to the left
she hops to the right
she wags her long tail
and observes the bright sight

she chirps as she flits
around the green park
she needs food for her family
before it is dark

with a bounce in her step
and eyes that can’t fail
she’s small and she’s sweet
behold
the wagtail

'I Am'

by Adrianna, age 9, Pine Bush NY

I am creative and exciting
I wonder if we are just dolls
I hear “floop, floop, flop” in my head
I see auras around people
I want guns to be illegal
I am creative and exciting

I pretend I am a vampire
I feel energy of people
I touch everything in the grocery store
I worry war will go on forever
I cry when people die
I am creative and exciting

I understand life isn’t fair
I say agoobersnoph
I dream I am the last person on earth
I try to accomplish every goal
I hope world hunger will end
I am creative and exciting

'I Am'

by Michelle, Pine Bush, NY

I am a dreamer and a believer
I wonder what will happen next
I hear cries of sorrow and of joy
I see dragons and mystical creatures from never before
I want world peace
I am a dreamer and a believer

I pretend to soar through the skies and see life as if a dream
I feel happiness and sorrow
I touch the close feelings of joy
I worry why hate has come among us
I cry when I hear of great sadness among a nation
I am a dreamer and a believer

I understand that one day we will leave and find our rightful place
I say if we have such a short life we must live it well
I dream the world will come together and forget hate
I try to make a difference in the best way I can
I hope for dreams to come true
I am a dreamer and a believer

'Its Not True!'

by Luke, Grade 5, Circleville, NY

No way.
It's not true.
I opened up my planner.
It just can't be tomorrow,
or even on the calendar!
I wish I could stay
out of school till May
Because tomorrow is
international hug day!

'The Girl Who Sits Across From Me'

by Kelton , Fairfield, CT

The girl who sits across from me,
I think she's kind of crazy.
She coughs on me and pokes my back
and in art she's sort of lazy.
She cuts me in line,
and gave me a blister,
but there's nothing I can do
when that girl is my sister!

and are really mean so
watch out for red crocodiles
ok?

'(No title)'

by Julianna

There is a mouse in me,
its glorious bright eyes shimmer in the night
as it scurrys across the floor.
Its ears widen
and he patiently listens to the clock go
tick
tick
tick.
The moon shines bright in the window
reflecting on the floor.
Silently my mouse craws into the moonlight.
Its graceful silky white fur now has a gleam.
Midnight has hit
and I feel him silently sleeping in my heart.

'Leaves of Nature'

by Michael , 5th Grade, Farifield, CT

On a quiet, Autumn day, when it is cold out-
when the leaves fall-
we use our senses and know by heart:
The crackling leaves- and
The colored leaves- and
The wrinkly leaves- and
The fresh smell of the leaves along with the fresh smell of nature- and
How it makes your mind burst with wonderful thoughts- and
It makes you shout out all those thoughts- and
How it reminds you of the season and its tasty
Foods.
Autumn.
Swish, crackle, crunch.
That is Autumn.
What our mind has in it.
When it comes, you know- by
Senses.

'Fruit Poem'

decomposed,
festering
stinky cheese man!!!

'The Airplane'

by Katherine , Age 10

Today I'm on an airplane,
It's not my favorite place,
The seats are really tiny,
The bathroom's a disgrace!
The food here is super-small,
It drains Mom's wallet so,
Where ever they get this tasteless junk,
That I'll never know!
The TVs are the worst part,
They're fuzzy and too high,
They're always too mature for me,
And they're colored yellow dye!
Now the journey's over,
Now I'm on flat ground,
Now's there's a new trouble,
My luggage can't be found!

the most blank smile i know

'Can You Imagine?'

by Katherine , Age 9, Riddleville, USA

Can you imangine
What the world'd be like
If there were helmets
Without bikes?
Or thank-you,
Without please?
Or strays
Without fleas?
Could there be bruises
Without bumps?
Or made beds
Without lumps?
Could there be brothers
And no sisters?
Or high-heels
Without blisters?
Could there be McDonalds
Without gross stuff?
Or pillows
Without fluff?
Could there war
Without dying?
Could there be pain
Without crying?
Could there be messy hair
Without combs?
Or happiness
Without poems?

'My Sister Has a Cat Inside Her'

by Lexi , Age 9, Puzzle Place, USA

My sister has a cat inside her.

It has fluffy white fur as soft as a cloud and eyes made of emeralds.

It purrs with a voice like the ocean...
Soft and smooth.

It prances with beauty,
moving calmly like a cloud.

She lives in my sister's heart,
her favorite playmate.

Meow...
Watch out, or
the cat
might
POUNCE!!!!!!!

'The Penguin Inside Me'

by Alex , Grade 5, Fairfield, CT

There is a panguin inside me...

with fur like a towel

and legs that cant let you run or stretch...

It never has conversations and never likes to yell or shout...

It walks at a speed limit of 2mph ...

It lives inside my heart and makes me quite every once in a while...

I wish I was like the penguin inside me...

'There is a Bird in Me'

by Charlotte , Age 10, Fairfield, CT

There is a bird in me
with feathers like soft green leaves

as fast and carefully as it can
it lives in my heart
and makes me hyper
i wish it could come out and sing to me.

'There is a Quiet Hurt Monkey in Me'

by Mariah , Grade 5, Kittery, ME

There is a quiet hurt monkey in me
With fur as soft as baby skin and
Teeth that are so soft that it couldn't
bite or hurt anyone.
It sounds like a delicate low purrr,
and can never get any louder than
a hamster on its wheel.
Because it is so sad, it struggles
when it moves because it hurts so bad.
It lives in my heart where everything is nice.
I wish she wasn't so hurt, then she could be happier.
She makes me feel sad and mad
and a little happy, no matter what is going on inside.

'Fog'

by Gabi , Grade 4, Rye, NY

'Me'

by Nicholas , Age ?, Germantown, WI

I'm as smart as a blinding bright light.
I'm as hungry as a lion ready to fight.

I'm as loud as a thunder storm shouting from the sky.
This is who I am.

'Where I'm From'

by Miriam , Grade 5, Cheshire, CT

I'm from playing volleyball until i'm as sore as an almost dying bird.
I'm from playing with my friends till dark at night where i cant tell im having fun.
I'm from playing with puppies until it seems like their fur is sinking through my heart.
I'm fom singing and dancing until i lose my voice and seems like i broke all my bones.
I'm from everywhere i want to be.

'Homework'

by Katherine , Age 10, Rye Brook, NY

I got a ton of homework today,
From my homeroom teacher,
'Cause she's a homework lover,
Infact, she is a preacher.
She gives us lots of projects,
All adds up a mile high,
And when I complain to teacher,
She makes to the sky.
She made us write a dumb poem,
This is the one,
When I beg her to change this to a math one,
She laughs and says that this will be fun.
She says it must be rhyming,
One thing I really hate,
I beg my mom to make me sick,
But she'll only let me late.
Now I like this thing,
Now I like the sound,
Maybe I'll be a poet
If my pen is found!

my rough uncosy skin

Where ever I go
she's always with me.

'Lamb Life'

by Alie , Grade 3, S. Salem, NY

As I prance so happily
While draped in soft-white fur,
I know as a lamb that I shall dwell,
Until my life hurries past.

And then as an angel,
With my happiness splintered,
And I on a cloud,
I shall always look back at my Lamb Life memories.

They are vivid yet blurred,
They grasp tightly to enchantment,
And every of all details,
Is the wondrous truth.

My Nannie was old and wrinkly
Her hair had gone thin and grey,

My nannie gave us Kisses and cuddles
Her smile was always sweet.

You hit the baseball and field the ball

Cricket is just like baseball but
You hit off a tee, the bat is flat and
There is only one base.

Badminton is like Tennis but you use
A birdie and a small racket

Ping-Pong you hit the ball over the net
It's just a mini version of Tennis

In Squash you hit the ball off the wall

No matter what the sport
I like them all!

'No Time for Nature'

by Marie

Oh, how the year changes
Lots of things to do
No time to listen to singing birds
Or cows that always moo

Lots of things to need
Lots of things to want
No time to look at cheetahs
Or an elephant

How the seasons change
How the trees grow
No time to notice this
Always have to go

The plants stay forgotten
The animals are very sad
What happened to the happy days
Or the kind lad?

The green, green grass
Or the light blue sky
Does anyone ever notice this?
These are things to miss.

Take time off your schedule
And sit on the grass
Listen to nature
Whether you're a lad or a lass.

And sweet dreams to you.

'Hope'

by Nivedita , India

Hope

Yes, now it is history,
But there is no mystery
That one day
There was sunshine,
That the nature and
The creation was all mine.

It is true, that through the
Vale of sorrow, gloomy and dark,
I no longer feel like a free lark
That used to fly with the air,
And had the flowers
to adorn its lair.

But there will again be light,
The sun will again turn bright;
I will then sow the
Seven colours in a row
So that in the years to come
They grow into a rainbow

Your beautiful buzzing song
Is forever gone.
No more flying around my ear
No more itchy stinging.
Wait, is that my mother I hear singing?

Hoping the water pushes them up to be great and never float down.

'A Story in the Deep Woods'

by Grace, Age 5, Greenwich, CT

In the deep woods where the coyotes howl
and the bears growl
Where the woodchucks chuck wood

In the deep woods where the alligators and crocodiles fight in the swamp
and the mokeys screech
Where the woodchucks chuck wood

In the deep woods where the gorilla sleeps
a shadow creeps

'Winter to Fall'

by John , 4th Grade, Riverside, CT

A crowd of people with snow coats, made me think of
snow castles and moats.
Fall is ending, Winters coming
And the weathers also changing
Before
The
Leaves
Were
Always
Falling
The snowflakes will replace that job
What used to be colorful is now blank
But still as beautiful as the leaves were once before.

'Losing'

by Jackie , Age 11, Armonk, NY

It's like you're afraid to try
Afraid to win
It's like racing against the clock
Every second counts
Winning is something that never happens
Beating a person as if it were a snail would be hard
I wish
I wish I could be a cheetah
A cheetah that could run faster than the speed of light
I would win every race
I could feel the glory of winning
But that would never happen to a loser like me
If I only could be
Be like one of those really smart kids
You know
The one who always wins those science fairs
But I'm a loser
No changing that

'The Wind'

by Ian , 4th Grade, Greenwich, CT

With wind it brings us life.
With life it brings us animals and plants.
It brings us chickens that go coccadoodaldoooo.
The wind brings us trees that blow leaves.
It brings imagination with it.
Like an unknown world.
It is a world that has life and freedom.
It has birds that chirp with understanding.
They are carried by the wind.
It passes us for a second and then it is gone.
To an unknown world.

'Little Brothers'

by John , 4th Grade, New Haven, VT

Little brothers are very crazy,
after that they're probably lazy.
But just let him be,
even though he is a peewee.
If he eats something non-sugar free,
he will jump around like a chimpanzee.
Boy, he watches a lot of T.V.
No wonder he's not in a spelling bee.
He is not exactly a V.I.P.,
he doesn't even say pardon me.
Sometimes he's really bad,
then he gets stark raving mad.
Here comes Mom and Dad,
then I say, "Too bad."
He tries to stand tall like Galahad,
when he is playing he acts like Sinbad.
Some of these, I am/do too,
but I have a better I.Q.
I don't say goo-goo,
I don't come from the zoo,
I do kung fu,
I say thank you,
I don't act like Winnie the Pooh,
I would never do a stink-a-roo,
I don't hop like a kangaroo,
and I don't say whoop dee do.
So, that's it.
Oh, I forgot to tell you, his name is Whit.

by Sarah , 4th Grade, Schuylerville, NY

'Snow'

by Imogen , Age 7, London, England

Snow is making a snowball
Snow is white
Snow is a snowman

Wet when a snowball hits
Sliding down the slope
Exciting and windy

Its quiet, its different
Big and smooth on the grass
Tall on the wooden table

Sometimes icy
Tough, going to slip
Bundle up against the cuts

'Vermont'

by Emily , Age 8, Greenwich, CT

My hair is like a Mad River,
running down my mountain body.
My legs are as high as the
tree tops of Vermont.
My brain is like the computer
running the chair lifts that
go to the top of the mountain.
My tummy is like a lake
in the forest of Vermont.
My fingers are as long as the signs
of the ski trails on the mountain.
I am as tall as the bunk beds
in the ski lodge.
My eyes are as dark as the hot chocolate
I drink after I come in from skiing.
Vermont is beautiful.
I love it!

'Beautiful Storm'

by Rick

I'm sitting in the dark alone looking out of the huge window in my living room.
There's a storm outside.
Giant waves are building up in the ocean.
Water is flooding over the shore.
The water is up to my stairs now.

I have to get out of here.
I have to run to the hills.
Dark clouds are in the sky.
Thunder is roaring.
This storm is turning into a hurricane.
I can

'Destinations After Life'

by Rithu , Age 11, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

The soul arises
from the body now dead
Hovering mid-air above
its head
Pondering upon the deeds
its master once had to heed
Should it consider the road
ahead
Or the one full of
dead
Is the body's deeds worthy of the haven
in peace
Or is it meant for the fire never to
cease
After a long wait
it decided its fate
It flew above with a determined face
to a place of
love and chaste

'The Predator'

by Kerry , Norfolk, England

the owl sits upon the heather
searching for a hidden feather
his bulb like eyes are open wide
the fox approaching stride by stride

the owl turned his head with pace
but only to see the predator's face
he pounced but only to catch the air
the owl of course had quite a scare

he happened to land on a safer branch
where the fox down there had not a chance
the owl settled for the night where down on the ground
the fox had a fright

the hunters came, their blood hounds
gave a fearsom bite
who knows what happened after then
but the fox never returned to his den.

'My Wishing List'

by Krista , Grade 5, Chappequa, NY

I wish I could fly high
to a tree
I wish that I was a
honey bee
I wish that these wishes
will come true
But all I need is help from
you
Teach me to read and to write
And maybe,
just maybe
My wishes will happen overnight
Well, maybe these wishes have a
twist
but I'll try to make new ideas
for my wishing list.

'Are You Really There?'

by Nicholas , Grade 6, Philadelphia, PA

Are you really there or is it my imagination?
Will you be there on the day of my graduation?
Are you there when I'm about to get hurt?
Are you there when I'm treated like dirt?
Are you the mist, fog, or steam?
Is that really you when I dream?
Are you there when I want to break down and cry?
Are you there when I'm sick to lift my spirit high?
I hope all of these answers are yes.
I miss you and love you, you were the best.

'Drumming'

by Sally , Grade 5, Chappequa, NY

At first,
when you are getting ready,
you feel the moist, cool sticks
as you clench them.
Then you start,
a bit uneasy and grinning slightly.
Next, BOOM!
It hits you hard as a rock,
banging out the rhythm.
Soon the music takes over!
Your body is running wild with expression.
Against the sticks,
your hands now feel like pure water,
just barely holding on!
